Good news on additional parking.

Members may recall the meetings, submissions and
proposed plans for a car park to be established at 204
Aberdeen Street.
It it would appear that these representations by
GAS and local businesses may have born fruit.
Correspondence from the Planning Department,
City of Greater Geelong indicates that the property
next to the Shearers’ Arms has been purchased and
the likelihood of parking being provided is imminent.
There are still a number of details to be sorted but
I am confident the parking will be available by 2010.
The land is currently zoned residential, and it will
be necessary for a rezoning to take place in order to
comply with the Planning Scheme, but this is expected
to be a relatively straightforward matter.
It will then be necessary to agree on a car park plan
which the Council will prepare, hopefully with our
submitted plans in mind. Their plans will come for our
perusal and consensus.

Following an agreement on the layout, Council will
commence a special charge scheme early in 2009. This is the mechanism for placing a charge on the properties which could benefit from the provision of a car park, (similar to a rate, but a once-only charge).

This will involve council advertising the proposal, calling
for submissions, hearing submissions and then decidingwhether to proceed or not. It is proposed the cost of the landpurchase and car park construction will be funded 50/50between owners and council.

We must understand that there are a number of variablesassociated with the whole process but given all factors areagreed upon, it is anticipated the construction couldcommence in the second half of 2009.

This is wonderful news. GAS members should be
reassured everything will be done to assist, without detrimentto our buildings, council and fellow owners’ properties toobtain this valuable parking space as soon as possible.

From the President’s cockpit!

Waterfront Show Unsuccessful in Grant Application.

Advice has been received from the City of Greater Geelong,
Arts and Culture Department that our funding application
was unsuccessful. At this point, it looks as if the Waterfront show will not go ahead.
Whilst the organisers still want the show to be part of the foreshore activity, lack of outside funding prohibits us to run the event without support from interests beyond the society. For instance, the cost of the marquee alone is $7,000.

I consider this event to have further growth potential in other ways but it might be that at this point the show (as far as GAS is concerned) might just have run out of steam.
Obviously this is a great disappointment but it is probably a good idea if we can attempt to conduct another show similar to the Waterfront exclusive of other financing arrangements.

GAS is capable of doing this with a positive approach.
We are the Geelong Art Society, an unfunded cultural identity which has contributed enormously to the region’s cultural community through its many exhibitions, lectures, teaching facilities and classes. Also, let us not forget our quite considerable experiences in the arts – features not available through any other organisation.

The Waterfront situation is regrettable so let’s turn our attention to the Queenscliff show and move on.

And may I also take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and the best wishes for the New Year.

Susan Sutton at the Geelong Gallery

The November General Meeting on Sunday 16th,
was unusual in that it took place in the Max Bell
Gallery within The Geelong Gallery.
The large gathering of GAS members was joined
by members of the visiting public who were interested
to sit in for the duration .... they were most welcome.
GAS member Susan Sutton took us on a journey of
inspiration and artistic discovery.

The occasion was her ninth solo exhibition,
Through seasons: Geelong and the Surfcoast.
Susan briefly outlined her artistic journey to this
point in time and then proceeded to discuss her most
recent eighteen large oil paintings of central Geelon
g
and the Surfcoast hanging around the walls of the
gallery.

All of Susan’s works relate to human activity and
involvement. They are social observations relevant to
our times and she tends to only paint subjects that are
fully understood and known very well to her.
There were numerous open discussions and many
questions from the floor about techniques, subjects and ideas.

It was an immensely enjoyable and highly informative session which drew many, many appreciative comments .... the time passed all too quickly.

Shearers Arms Gallery
25th November - 8th December.

A very vibrant exhibition indeed, full of inspiration
and obvious enjoyment by the participating artists....
there was a real sense of ‘joie de vivre’ at the opening
on Wednesday evening, 26th November .... even
Frida Kahlo dropped in from the past to offer a few
supportive words of encouragement!

Tutor Jenny Evan’s group of painters have put on
a fine showing of their latest work using a wide variety
of mediums, styles and subjects.

It is exciting to see
such interesting explorations.
Well done ladies!

GAS Peak Painters Performing

On Saturday 8th November our Art society celebrated
with more than 90 participants in the P.P.P.
After a welcome by our President Allan Langdon, I was
delighted to introduce our first guest artist Agata Lelek
and Erin her sitter.

Agata entertained us with warmth and wit, demonstrating her talent with pastel, painting a beautiful portrait of Erin. Along the way there were many tips for us to put into practice with our own paintings. Agata has left two paintings in our Gallery for sale.

David Taylor a renowned Australian watercolourist
enthralled us with a painting of Venice.
He was a delight to watch and so very enthusiastic
about his painting, doing little skips and dances when his
brush strokes pleased.

David also chose the Best Painting in our exhibition - it went to Louise Price for her beautiful pastel,“Urban Isolation”, a very popular choice.

Our next demonstrator was the famed David Chen, an
internationally recognised artist who performed a magical
painting of Sorrento - he delighted with his bold brush
strokes and clean, crisp colour. We have three of David’s’
paintings for sale in our Gallery.

Between all this we enjoyed coffee with Lloyd Owen
manning the machines and Betty Woolford and Bev Burch
brewing tea, these girls worked all day in the kitchen doing
a sterling job.

They would like to thank those members who helped
out during the day washing cups and glasses.
Our Lunch was supplied by Steampacket and once again
a wonderful fare was enjoyed.
The wines from Jindalee winery were much appreciated
and Geelong Art Supplies ran a busy business providing
us with all our art needs at 20% discount.
The Geelong Advertiser sent a photographer and
published an account in the Monday paper.

This day can only be successful with the help of a team
namely Allan, Ramya, Roma, Lorraine, Michelle, Lloyd and
Faye, Betty and Bev and David Moore who can move
tables, chairs and easels like a fork lift.
A big and grateful Thankyou to all who helped make
our P.P.P a grand success.

I am pleased to note that we had 40 people attending
who were non members, and hopefully this will increase
our membership and attendance.
It is all about letting people know, “What the Art
Society can do for you”. I was delighted to organise what
turned out to be a very successful day.
Without the effort, planning and organization of my
predecessor, Faye Owen over the past three years, my job
would have been much more difficult.
I’m sure you were all inspired and hopefully enjoyed
the day.
- Sue

GAS Hosts Budding Artists.

GAS played host to 90 schoolchildren on Tuesday 11th
November from StThomas’ Primary School, Drysdale.
The students were participating in a community arts and
culture excursion, and attended in groups of 30 over three
hours. They visited GPAC, Geelong Gallery and Botanical
Gardens.

Many showed a lot of interest when they were told some
of the history of the Shearers’ Arms. None of the students
had been to the gallery before and showed considerable
interest in the Studio. They were particularly intrigued by
the setup and amazed by the mirror.

Fortunately Lianne Gough was able to come in and talk
to one of the groups, and I thank Lianne for her time, and
naturally her skills with kids and art.

I guess that it would not have been quite the same without
Bruno conducting a class and allowing two groups to invade
his ‘space’. With his charismatic Italian charm, Bruno
whipped up a couple of cards, yes poppies, much to the
surprise of the students. Bruno is going to attend St. Thomas
school soon to share his skills at making Christmas cards.

The students left with a copy of the Shearers Arms
Gallery history, newsletters and class timetables. Hopefully
we may see some of these young people join our society in
the future.

And to cap off a very successful school visit, one of the
teachers purchased a piece of Jacinta Leitch’s sculpture.

Artist’s Holiday 2009

Sunday 8 to Sunday 22 February, 2009

Feel like a holiday, a holiday with a
difference – a painting holiday! Or just a creative holiday to read, write and maybe take a photo or two. A group of artists from the Geelong and Ballarat Artists’ Societies have been going down to Apollo Bay in February for a good many years, and keep
going down for more. We stay at the Star of the Sea, Apollo Bay and set up our gear in the games room or paint outdoors in the
surrounding hills, the boat harbour and the
beach, whatever takes the fancy. We also
go for the occasional bush walk, beachwalks, sunrise and sunset walks. Sometimes we swim or just relaz (a combination of
relaxing and being lazy) and read orwhatever!

You can come for a day or two or the whole two weeks.
Accomodation is very affordable, calculate on $20 a day per
person (a pensioner’s discount is also available).
Single accomodation/room cannot be guaranteed, as this
depends on numbers coming.

Meals are self-catered or what often happens is we have
a shared group “cook-up” in the large communal kitchen, or
you can go out on the town for dinner. You can cook for
yourself if you want to also. One thing is a fact, we have
never been known to starve! Friends and partners welcome
too!

If you are interested in coming along or would like more
information, for Ballarat phone Cheryl Bradley (Ballarat) 5330 1495 or email cjbradley5@bigpond.com.au

or for Geelong – Ria and Adrian Baker on 5275 8745 or
email aribal@optusnet.com.au

Hope to see you there!

Please send $20 deposit per person to secure your place,
and the dates you would like to come in an envelope to:

On the Great Ocean Road Exhibition
You might just make it to the champagne opening on
Saturday, December 6 at 2pm at the Eagles Nest Fine Art
Gallery at Aireys Inlet but you will be able to view Margaret
Woodhead and June Paterson’s Along the Great Ocean
Road Exhibition until December 28.

The exhibition features a new group of paintings by
both artists on how they see and interpret the beauty and
splendour of the Great Ocean Road.
Margaret Woodhead and June Paterson have been
passionate about their coastal art for many years.
Their successful joint exhibition at Eagle’s Nest Gallery
only twelve months ago has enticed the pair to do it over
again.

Margaret and June have prepared around forty pastel
paintings between them and these works are sure to be
popular again with the region’s holiday visitors.
The coast stretching from Anglesea to Apollo Bay is
the main source for their atmospheric images.
The Eagles Nest Gallery is situated at 50 Great Ocean
Road, right in the heart of Aireys Inlet.
